We are forming teams to makeover 1 or 2 apartments for the Jenesse Center (www.jenesse.org). They care for formerly abused women and their children until they can get back on their feet. This organization has several sets of apartment buildings that they own, each consisting of 2 or 3 bedroom apartments. Some are in pretty bad shape. Actress Halle Berry has adopted one complete apartment complex to renovate, but volunteers are needed to help with other spaces. We would really love to get a team of volunteers together to renovate at least one apartment for them. This would require new flooring, lighting, painting and furniture/accessories.

We have teamed with SRO (www.sro.org) in Downtown Los Angeles to design spaces for the newly rennovated Ford Hotel which will house formely homeless individuals in low income apartments.

We also have a team that is working with a hospice organization in Thousand Oaks to help design and furnish a home that will offer free hospice care.

For more information, please email karen@nestfeathers.org.

Nest Feathers current design project, the Downtown Womens’s Center Project Home, was completed and opened on December 14, 2010. Volunteers from design schools, ASID chapter professionals and arts community members have accomplished so much during the last three years!

Our volunteers professionally designed the interiors for the 67,000 square foot facility to meet the needs of 72 residents, day center visitors and the staff who provide vital services to the homeless women of Los Angeles.

We collectively provided over $220,000 in pro-bono design services, from initial interior concepts, donor solicitation, to finished installation.

We brought over $90,000 in donated furniture and art from the business and design community to complete the interiors.

Each volunteer became a link towards understanding and ending homelessness in Los Angeles.

We want to give a special thank you to the ASID professional and student chapters, and the past Presidents of ASID Los Angeles, Deborah Davis, Kristen King and Victoria Reitz and, for the tremendous energy and talent that helped make this project a success.

Thank you also to the members of the DWC community, especially Lisa Watson, Joe Altepeter and Brooke Lykins who welcomed us into their world and shared their passion with Nest Feathers.

Nest Feather volunteers: each of you made a difference in contributing to the reality of this beautiful, functional center. We weren’t sure how we were going to pull it off – and there you were!

And especially to the ladies who live in and visit the center – thank you for how you have inspired us! We hope you enjoy your new home.
